The product
What is Index?
A trading terminal for UK gas and power. It puts both fuels, day-ahead to the back of the forward curve, on one screen in a browser, with the tools to chart, export, alert on and explain what the market is doing.
Who is it for?
It was built for energy consultancies and third-party intermediaries who advise businesses on when to buy. It also suits traders, suppliers, generators and businesses that buy their own energy. It was built on a working UK energy desk that uses it every day.
Which markets does it cover?
UK NBP gas and UK baseload power: day-ahead, the front months and seasons for each fuel in the tables and every listed month on the forward curve. TTF, JKM, Brent, WTI, carbon and FX sit alongside for context on Lite and up. No other geography is covered.
What are inferred bids and offers?
Thin contracts often show a dash in the bid or offer. On Lite and up, Index infers the missing side from the rest of the live gas and power market. Where one side is live it is kept exactly. Inferred figures show in a muted italic. A hover card gives the model's mid, a range and a confidence grade. A switch turns them off. They are indicative: live quotes always take precedence.
How often do prices update?
On a rolling cycle through the day, so the screen shows the market as it stands rather than this morning's snapshot. It is not tick data. If you need tick data to trade against, Index is the wrong product.
Can I trade on it?
No. It is a screen, not a venue. Execution stays wherever it is now.
Does it tell me when to buy?
No. It shows the market and the tools to read it. Price Outlook gives the chance of a contract reaching a level, and the technical analysis verdict reads 15 indicators, but neither is a forecast. The view, and the decision, stay yours.
What is BCI?
The Band Compression Index, an indicator designed and built in house by Index. It weighs several statistical measures of a contract's volatility against its recent price action, and flags the contract on its chart when that market has gone unusually quiet. Volatility tends to move in cycles, so a quiet spell is often where a bigger move starts. The flag tells you where to look; the call stays yours. It is on Pro and Ultimate.
What is the PPA Exchange?
Coming soon to Ultimate. A screen that sets UK solar and wind PPA offers against the Index forward curve and turns each into an effective cost you can compare with baseload, with a request for a firm price sent to the seller. See it in the tour →
Pricing and tiers
What does it cost?
Per named user, per month, excluding VAT: Basic £199, Lite £349, Plus £399, Pro £499 and Ultimate £849. Exchange data fees are charged at cost and reported per user. See pricing →
Is there a discount for more users?
Yes. Once you hold three users, every further user is 25% off its tier price. It does not compound, so the fourth, fifth and every later licence each get the same 25%.
We want people on different tiers. How does the 25% work then?
Where users are bought together, the 25% comes off the cheapest licences, so the three dearest are charged in full. The cost calculator works it out for any mix of tiers. Open the calculator →
Which tier do I need?
Basic puts the market on a phone. Lite puts it on a screen. Plus adds triggers, position reports and hedging trajectories for a team that cannot watch the screen all day. Pro adds the analysis a desk advising clients uses: BCI, technical analysis, budget at risk, Market Radar and the time machine. Ultimate adds Within-Day Power, the policy generator, your own branding and, coming soon, the PPA Exchange. Compare every feature →
Can different people be on different tiers?
Yes. Each named user holds one licence at the tier they need, and a user can move up a tier at any time on the same account.
What is Basic?
A mobile licence. It shows the contracts the terminal shows, at the same closes, on a phone, with two weeks of history per contract. It does not open in a desktop browser or on a tablet.
Can we try it first?
Yes. The demo terminal opens for 30 minutes with no card. If you would rather be shown round, a short call with a screen share is usually enough to tell whether it fits how your team works. Try the demo terminal →
Getting started
What do we need to install?
Nothing. It runs in a browser. Sign in and the screen is there, on any machine. Basic installs to a phone's home screen.
How quickly can we be live?
In days rather than weeks. Tier, licences and checkout sit on one page, so there is no sales cycle to wait on.
Can we put our own brand on it?
On Ultimate. Your logo, name and colour go on the screen, on every chart and on every export.
Can we get the data out?
Full price history exports to a formatted Excel workbook on Lite and up, and any chart copies to the clipboard as an image for an email or a report. Position reports go out to Excel on Plus and up.
